Shri Datta Mahatmya was written by the great saint Shrimat PP Sadguru Shri Vasudevanand Saraswati Swami Maharaj in the year 1901. Swamiji was also known as Shri Tembe Swami Maharaj, (born in Mangaon and took samadhi at Garudeshwar, Gujrat) Some of His famous disciples were Shri Rang Avadhuta Maharaj of Nareshwar, Shri Gulavani Maharaj of Pune, Shri Ganda Maharaj of Narsobachi Wadi, Shri Nana Maharaj Taranekar of Indore.

Datta Mahatmya is considered the most important book in the worship of Lord Shri Guru Dattatreya, it equals to Shri GuruCharitra and in Maharashtra it is possessed by all devotees of Dattatreya, Datta Sampradaya and Shri Narasimha Saraswati Swami Maharaj of Ganagapur.

PP Shri Vasudevanand Saraswati Swami Maharaj composed Shri Datta Purana in Sanskrit, which is based on all the essence of all the 18 Puranas. Shri Datta Purana was divided into 3 parts of Jnana, Karma and Upasana. Then in the year 1901 Shri Swami Maharaj composed Shri Datta Mahatmya in Marathi (Ovi metre) which is derived from the Upasana part of Shri Datta Purana. There are a total 51 chapters and 5400 Ovis in Datta Mahatmya. Datta Mahatmya contains the legends of Parshurama, Sahastrarjuna, Alarka, King Aau and Yadu. It also has the gist of Navavidha Bhakti and the timeless knowledge of the Upanishads.
