'North and South' (1855) is the second industrial novel by English writer Elizabeth Gaskell (1810 – 1865). Raised in a wealthy family, Margaret led a comfortable life of the privileged class. But when her father moved the family to the north, she had to adjust to life in Milton - the town is facing the industrial revolution. Margaret hates the new "masters of life," and the owner of a cotton mill, John Thornton, for it becomes a real personification of evil.
