The Virginia e-Learning Backpack Initiative was proposed by Governor Robert F. McDonnell and approved by the 2013 General Assembly. The purpose is to provide every ninth grade student attending a public school that is not fully accredited with a tablet computer, digital content and applications, and access to content creation tools. In support of this initiative, the Virginia Department of Education will host a summer institute on August 12-13, 2013, at the Richmond Marriott Hotel. This institute will assist school divisions as they transition to tablet computers and digital content and is open to all school divisions. It will provide division personnel with information and strategies for successful implementation. Exhibitors will display cutting-edge technologies that include tablet computers, peripheral devices, content, and applications.
