The US Oil Field App was developed by GCS Research, an award winning geospatial technology company based in Missoula, Montana. The map displays oil field and shale gas locations in the USA. Not all states have oilfields. Oil field data is not available for Mississippi, Louisiana, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Other states do not have oil fields. Base map data provided by Esri ArcGIS Online.

The shale gas plays layer is a blob map of the general areas for active shale gas plays in the US. Features are attributed with basin names, shale play names and the geologic age of the plays. The polygons are constructed in a variety of ways which cannot be consistent due to the variety of data available and the maturity of each shale gas play. For example, some are outlines around active drilled areas; others are the USGS interpretation of the assessment unit, etc. The Shale Gas Basin layer shows sedimentary basins associated with the EIA active shale gas plays as of 12-5-2008. Sedimentary basin which do not have active shale gas plays as of publication date are not included in this app. Sources for the basins are mostly from the US Geological Survey and state agencies such as the WY Geological Survey. Data provided by Department of Energy, Energy Information Administration (EIA).
