There are lots of this kind of app around but Mercury Free offers some extra features that make it a really good choice. First, it includes most of the options available in the desktop version: file transfer, voice clips, group chat, smileys, different font types and sizes, and many more. It also allows you to manage multiple MSN accounts and you can chat not only with your MSN contacts, but with Yahoo contacts as well (if you've got an account). You’ll get notifications in your status bar, which you can configure in the app options (vibrate, audio, led...). That way you’ll receive any messages sent to you when you were offline.
It offers some extra features such as invisible sign-in, to avoid your contacts seeing you connected until you want them to, or a screen widget. But its main strength is its cool interface set in a black background with white letters, and the smooth swiping between the contacts list and conversations.
This is the free version of this app which has ads (a little intrusive). If you want rid of them, you have to make a donation of $3.99 to get the paid version.

I have been using the app for over a year now and this messenger client works so well, it is so amazing that it is free. You can set custom alarms for each contact or groups, and the notifications appear with your contact's avatar in the task bar or locke
