Beautiful Guitar Hero-esque rhythm game on the piano

    • Gorgeous illustrations
    • Frankly lovely and varied sound design
    • Simple and intuitive gameplay
    • Storyline ought to be a little more evident
    • Hard mode simply impossibly difficult

    "Mystic urban fantasy piano hero"

Love Guitar Hero-style tapping games? From Rayark Inc. - developers of the popular music rhythm game Cytus - comes Deemo, a piano-themed variation on the genre.

Tap the cascading notes at precisely the right moment to successfully play each song. You'll need to focus on the unique tempo and melody of the tracks to advance the plot, which in turn displays more beautifully drawn scenes from Deemo's castle world. The songs themselves are as lovely as they are haunting; dialing back the difficulty level allows you to sit back and submerse yourself within the echoing soundscapes, if you're so inclined.

The plot isn't entirely clear from the app alone; reading the developer's description of a storyline involving a solitary mystic creature and a lost little girl falling from the sky actually adds quite a bit to the experience. It would be great to see this more fully integrated into gameplay. I also found the "hard" versions of each song simply absurd in terms of difficulty, but hey, could be that I just have fat fingers.

Rayark Inc.'s Deemo is a solid addition to the rhythm game cadre, appealing to a sense of solitary, ethereal harmony played out in piano keys.
