Conservatism can take on many flavors and been exemplified in historical figures from Booker T. Washington, Fredrick Douglass, Marcus Garvey, Malcom X and many others. However, there are certain characteristics that are common to all forms of black conservatism.

Like any other person, a black person wants to conserve his freedom, dignity, the ability
to worship, provide food, shelter and protection for his family.
Conservatism has been a part of the black experience in America since the 1600's.
Historically in the black community, in the face of Jim Crow and segregation, "conservatism" was a “response” to the exclusion blacks faced from a largely racist mainstream society. The black community sought to create their “own” institutions that would foster economic independence, self-esteem and self-reliance in the face of an oppressive society.
Unlike today, there were many black communities that were viable centers of economic and cultural influence that existed during the most racially oppressive periods in American history.
