The name conic section originates from the fact that if you take a regular cone and "slice it" with a perfect plane, you get all kinds of interesting shapes. They include ellipse, parabola, and hyperbola. All these conic sections can be described by second order equation ax^2 + bxy + cy^2 + dx + ey = f
