Smoking is an addiction to snuff, mainly caused by one of its active components, nicotine, the action of the substance abuse ends up conditioning consumption. This addiction causes diseases harmful to consumer health.
According to the World Health Organization snuff is the leading cause of disability and premature death in the world.1 In Europe each year smoking causes 1.2 million deaths. It is directly related to the appearance of 29 illnesses, including 10 different types of cancer and more than 50% of cardiovascular disease. Smoking is directly responsible for about 90% of lung cancer deaths and approximately 80-90% of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and enfisema.2 In Spain every year over 50,000 people die from eating snuff, rather than traffic accidents and the use of all illegal drugs combined.
The snuff is addictive mainly because of its active ingredient, nicotine, which acts on the central nervous system. The smoker undergoes physical and psychological dependence that generates a withdrawal syndrome, called smoking. Nicotine is addictive, but it has antidepressant effects and symptomatic relief of anxiety. Not used in pharmacy, because in the second half of the twentieth century were discovered and more effective antidepressants are not addictive. Neither is used for symptomatic relief of anxiety, except in exceptional cases, for benzodiazepines, which are the most widely used type of tranquilizers also create dependency, but are considered more effective.
