This app also has a little progress bar that helps keep track of how close you are towards the finish line since the start time of your countdown. It requires no special permissions to run.
Go to Home screen, long press on an empty space and select "Widgets" from "Add to Home screen" pick list; then select "Countdown" from the "Choose widget" pick list to add a countdown widget.

Start and end time of newly created countdowns are set to midnight by default.

Loved the clean, superb design at first. But it won't update the time left on the countdown! (That's the whole point of a countdown widget.) Fix it and I'll gladly put it back to 5 stars. (Motorola Triumph.)
