"Track the World in Augmented Reality"

Reviewed by / Sep 20, 2011

Layar is probably the most complete database for Augmented Reality searching

And we mean the most complete regarding the amount of layers you can apply: there are 500+ layers divided in 35 categories. Thus, you can search nearby accommodation, museum, city tours, dating, employment, Health centers, sports and leisure, among many other resources.

Searching with Layar is as easy as applying as many layers as you want and hold your phone up. Aim with your camera to see them around and walk to the place as if your device was a compass. That easy. What's more, there's also a list view, with the distance below or a map view with pins. You can view or insert comments in order to know if that's the place that fits with your interests. You can also share the places through social networks, take a screenshot, choose the distance and many features from preferences. Finally, you can mark places as favorites or use the four main tabs to discover layers: new, popular, featured or Samsung layers.

Layar is set in a good-looking layout, divided in categories for finding quickly the layer you want to apply. It works pretty good, way better than others we've tried. The only flaw is that sometimes places or resources are shown overlayed and it's difficult to choose one or another. Despite of this, regarding integration of hundreds of databases as layers, there's no discussion: Layar is still on the top of Augmented Reality apps.

Layar has been developed by Layar. Although this is the only app they've launched on the Android Market, their successful its obvious.

Accrossair is much-much better but it's not available on Android. Layar gives you loads of stupid layers to try which are sponsored but you can't really find the nearest bar or a restarurant like you could in Accrossair.

Saw the competition prop placed around shopping malls. It said click on the "Sign Up" sign which appears on the screen. I tried countless of times to no result. Was this a scam to make people install your app? How cheap can you be? Sad...

Have to scan a whole newspaper page just to figure content? Dumb.
