Add this app to your lists
This app continuously captures camera images in the background for timelapse videos (see video link for a sample).

Delay between images is adjustable down to 1 second.
Normal phone operation can continue with minimal CPU load.

Note: images are saved on SD card in an intermediate format to minimize CPU load. Use "Convert All" to convert them to PNG (warning: may take some time).

This app is open-source under GPL. The source code is available at https://github.com/floe/Background-Timelapse

I have a couple of additional features planned - please stay tuned :-)

Do nothing, do not test it.

Works great but only captures 640x480 vga resolution to .yuv files. And then it requires a slow conversion to png, taking up extra space on sd card. File names are not timestamped. Not been updated for 3 years. Free and reliable though, and open source.

Only took 45 images of my planned 2h lapse (2000ms interval), then stopped without any notice. Probably stopped working right after it was put into background when I turned the screen off. Totally useless bullshit! Android 4.0.4 on Sony Xperia S.

Works great for my purposes as a nighttime slug detector. Would prefer if it sucked the life out of the slugs rather than the battery.

Works ok as long as it's running on the screen. Although it says it's running it stops when it goes to the background. Droid.
