The free ABC app for Android smartphones offers you independent content, whenever and wherever you want it. Watch the live stream of ABC News 24 or listen to a great selection of ABC Radio streams and podcasts while reading the latest news stories from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Start the day well informed. Set the alarm within the app to wake up to your choice of ABC News in 90 Seconds, ABC News 24, selected ABC Radio podcasts or any of our live radio streams.

You can now play related audio and video on article pages or choose from a selection of 80+ podcasts and live streams of Radio and TV.

Are you into Science or Music news? Find related ABC TV and Radio shows as you browse each topic; Check the weather and stories that are relevant to your location (Yes! ABC Local News is now available).

Pull down category pages to refresh content and ensure you have the latest available from ABC Online; Set your app to only play media files over WiFi and take better control of your data consumption.

This app was designed for smartphones but will also work on Android tablets. A tablet specific interface is already under production, coming soon to Google Play.

Tips to help you keep tabs of your data consumption:

# ABC News 24 can use from 118 MB to 207 MB per hour on Froyo and Gingerbread devices and from 116MB to 313MB per hour on Honeycomb, ICS, Jelly Bean and KitKat, depending on the strength of your network connection

# Live radio streams can consume up to 40 MB in 60 minutes

    Don't know what all the rave is about. I can only imagine it must have been really crap before. This must be Beta version - right ?

    Wow, what an improvement. Clear and easy to navigate. Wish Google News could do an app like this, their newest effort doesn't come close.

    The latest update had a lot of improvements: now watching videos in the app itself is possible rather than being directed into a browser which is great. However, the same rule could be applied for the the news link and "related storie“ section: they still direct you to a browser. I'm sure you are cable of fixing that too.

    Fantastic news app. But. Please bring back the old menu/navigation perhaps as an option in settings for those who prefer it. New one is way too clunky and spread out for me. New actual article presentation is great. Please do something with your database flags to stop multiple appearances of same article over the separate sections. Very annoying especially now headings are so big, graphical and
