"Tech-Informed in a few minutes"

Reviewed by / Jan 16, 2013

Riversip is a news reader that focus on issued trending headlines

If you're looking for a reader to sync your all your RSS subscriptions this isn't what you're looking for (at least not so far). This is a preset-sourced reader that features the most-read and interesting tech-related news.

It has been developed to highlight them in a way that help you to stay updated in seconds. Riversip's Top News tab will show you the most relevant news per week, day or latest highlights in a scrollable list. You can tap in one article to open and read it from the app. Moreover, you can add from Topics tab those topics you want to get the latest info available. There's not a list of topics though, you'll have to use a search bar to input the ones you're looking for. Bear in mind that this is a tech-news reader, so the topics will be tech-related. If you're a dedicated techie or wannabe, this is a good starting point. Once you've added the topics, they'll remain in "My news" for a fast access to them.

You can sync Riversip with Facebook and Twitter. This way you'll enjoy a personalized briefing and see relevant chatter around news events from your Timeline. It takes some time for Riversip's servers to catch up with your Twitter timeline but, be patience because after that it works perfectly.

The main catch: it doesn't allow Google Reader integration. Besides that, if you're really into technology issues and don't want to miss a single thing related to it, this a fast and comfortable way to keep tune.

Developer's original description available here
This is the only tech news reader that guarantees you'll be up-to-date in less than 5 minutes.

This app's main goal is simple: Help you catch up on technology news in minimal time and on your own schedule. No information overload !

So, what exactly do you get in this app?

* No setup or learning time required. Fire it for the first time – and immediately see what are the current “must-know” news in the technology world.

* Catch up on your own schedule: You can choose your own time-frame in one tap, so you'll be up-to-date no matter how often you're checking things out.

* Check out only the headlines – or go deeper: You can check out any news item's coverage from the many sources which covered it. Seeing how different publications cover the same event from different angles was never so easy !

* See what people your friends from the social networks had to say about any given story and have their tweets/posts affect which stories you see first, giving you a socially-personalized news summary

* Seen a topic of interest in the news? Drill down and get more focused items for that topic, from the most relevant sources. It's the quickest way to go deep without being overloaded with items – you always get the most relevant ones, in prioritized order.

* No need to set up your sources and start looking for feeds! We automatically picks the most relevant article for any real-world event and shows it to you – and it also learns what sources you prefer as you use the app, and shows coverage from them to you when it's available.

* Choose your favorite topics so you can easily stay on top of the things in the topics that matter to you. Then, with one tap you can switch between seeing the “World View” and seeing what's up in your own universe of interests.

* Push notifications for prominent events

When I select an article to read, I just get a blank page. Uninstalling.

Well done! Always contains at least one - and usually more valuable nugget of tech news for me. Thanks for that

The concept is good and execution is simple. This means the app does its job of delivering relevant tech news without too much fuss, though articles load a bit slowly. However, the design is painfully outdated and doesn't come close to Android guidelines, wasting screen space and making it clunky. The overly prominent "Share this app" button is annoying, as are the blinking "3 viruses detected" ad
