Modern Family is a comedy series airing on ABC. It was created by Christopher Lloyd and Steve Levitan, after sharing stories of their own “modern families.” The show is depicted in “mockumentary style”—the fictional characters talk directly into the cameras during many situations that arise throughout the series. (Similar to NBC’s The Office.)
The show revolves around three families that are interrelated through Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill), and his children, Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen) and Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson). Jay Pritchett is the patriarch of the family and is married to a younger woman, Gloria (Sofia Vergara), who along with Jay, raises her son Manny (Rico Rodriguez). Claire is a homemaker mom married to Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell), a real estate agent. Together they have 3 children: Haley (Sarah Hyland), Alex (Ariel Winter), and Luke (Nolan Gould). Mitchell is a lawyer, who along with partner Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet), have adopted a Vietnamese baby, Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons).
Since its premier in the fall of 2009, Modern Family has remained popular. President Barack Obama has cited Modern Family as being one of his favorites to watch with his children. The show has won numerous awards, including a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy. In the summer of 2011, Modern Family, received 17 Emmy nominations. And in 2012, won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series in a Musical or Comedy.
Each character on the show is relatable and loveable in their own way. James Parker of The Atlantic has said that “the American family circa 2011 is, after all, an acutely self-conscious an self-interrogating unit: How does one ‘parent’? Who does what, which ‘role’ ? […] Modern Family taps right into all this, the cameras that lurch through its three household producing the sensation of a wild and shaky experiment, recorded for purposes educational or scientific.
Gone are the days of the cookie cutter family: man + wife + 2.5 kids. Modern Family takes an honest, and often hilarious, look at the composition and complexity of today’s “modern family.”
