Danny García (born March 20, 1988) is an undefeated American professional boxer of Puerto Rican descent and the reigning WBC, WBA (Super), and Ring Magazine light welterweight Champion.
Danny García was born in North Philadelphia ("North Philly") to a mother from Bayamón, Puerto Rico and Ángel García originally from Naguabo, Puerto Rico, who was also a boxer. It was his father who introduced him to boxing, taking him to Philadelphia's Harrowgate Boxing Club when he was ten years old, the minimum age allowed by local law for a minor to train. García Sr. has since been his primary boxing coach. Having been raised in the city with the second largest Puerto Rican community in the United States, Danny García identified with his heritage, stating early in his career the desire to become the "next great Puerto Rican fighter". Danny Garcia admired Boxing Hall of Famer Carlos Ortíz as his favorite boxer and considered Ortíz's fight against Lenny Matthews in Philadelphia among the most memorable he had ever witnessed.
Going into his fight on September 14th against Lucas Matthysse, Danny García was a big underdog, despite his status as champion and his undefeated record. Nevertheless, Danny García stood firm and fought a mature fight, trading rounds early with his opponent to test the waters. In the middle rounds, Matthysse developed an injury to his right eye from Danny García's left hook, which the young Champ exploited. Matthysee bravely battled back, but Garcia knocked him down in the 11th round, a first for the challenger. The twelfth round saw Danny García lose a point for a low blow, and ended in a slug-fest. The last ten seconds of round 12 twelve proved thrilling, both fighters went toe to toe. In the end, the judges handed Garcia a unanimous decision: 115-111, 114-112 and 114-112.
