We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine'sDay, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? One of the stories suggests that Valentine attempted to help Christians escape from harsh Roman prisons and was thus killed. Another story claims that this day is actually a pagan holiday of Lupercalia, a roman holiday, which was transferred to Christian tradition and is celebrated till this day. Valentine’s Day began to be popularly celebrated around 17th century. Back then people exchanged hand written notes and small tokens of affection. By the 18th century it was a common tradition among friends and lovers. Soon Valentines cards appeared along with other today popular Valentine gifts. Today Valentines is the second largest card-sending holiday of the year!
