"Making typos social"

Reviewed by: Emmanuel Lund / Nov 05, 2012

Fontly is a photo-based social network featuring typography found all across the globe

If you love advertising and design, you know how important is typography. Fontly is a photo-based social network that goes a step further on specialization: people on Fontly shares photos of ads, posters, tags and any other type and signage. It claims to become a digital archive of real typos from around the World.

First off, signing up. Although there's no integration with Twitter/Facebook Connect, registering is as easy as adding an e-mail, username and password. After that, you'll have full access to Fontly database. The app is set in a good-looking minimalistic layout. It runs smoothly, even photo loading is quite fast.

Apps is divided in four categories: Latest (latest photos uploaded by all users), Best (best rated photos posted by all users), near (photos posted nearby) and Mine (your profile). For posting a picture you just need to press camera button and take it. It's a pity but unfortunately photos located in your gallery cannot be posted, just photos taken from the app.

You can retweet photos, like them, see where were taken and who posted it. An original approach of a hackneyed app concept. Recommendable.

Developer's original description available here
Collect and share typography all across the globe. Create a living, collaborative, and digital archive filled with examples of unique type and signage that speak of a bygone era.

Share the best of our world’s ghost signs, neon, architectural, foil lettering, hand-painted, and other typographical wonders. Preserve this invaluable part of our visual heritage.

How it works:
- Take a picture of found lettering.
- Title and tag the picture using the available categories.
- Your picture will be automatically geo-tagged and added to Fontly’s feed, map, and website.
- Share on Twitter, and beyond.

For an extended, full-screen experience, check out www.font.ly to discover the community’s curated typography on Fontly’s interactive map.

I like the idea of this, but the implementation needs work. It would be nice to upload photos already taken, for example. Also, no matter what I do I can't get image thumbnails to show on the latest photos section or my own uploads.

Looking forward to seeing how this develops in the future, a great first impression and think it will be a well used app on the Note2.
