There are lots of launchers already. For this reason, we really appreciate when one of the new releases comes with innovative features. aShell is one of this kind.
First off, aShell launcher changes the static nature of the dock and turns it into a sort of blind-like swipable status bar. It opens up like the built-in status bar but from bottom to top. This way, you can see the call log, SMS inbox, app drawer preview or aShell quick settings and easily give calls, reply sms, launch an app or set backgrounds, wallpapers or sound settings.
Regarding scenery, it has been set in a good-looking 3D-like layout (although you can choose between 3D/2D widget style). It is really stylish and in some regards it reminds ICS 4 layout. The app drawer is simple (horizontal swipe) with no effects (well just one, a zoom-like effect). It's highly configurable though, from aShell settings.
Although it looks like really stylish, it doesn't work as smoothly as we expected (specially if you choose 3D widget style), at least regarding screen transitions. No complaints regarding amount of options: from settings you can set this launcher to your own: clock widget settings, general behaviour, system preferences, sounds and vibration, etc. However, it doesn't include either themes nor icons.
In a nutshell, a reliable launcher with an interesting added-value feature (docking bar) set in a good-looking layout that just needs to be enhanced regarding fluency and themes.
