The Awakening - Kate Chopin

These stories deal with themes connected with Chopin's attitude toward race, death, sexuality, class, relationships and women in society. Each story reaches deep into the reader’s mind and forces the reader to think deeply about the many of the issues. The Awakening was particularly controversial upon publication in 1899. It was censored and considered immoral not only for its frank depictions of female sexual desire, but also for the female characters, who choose not to follow the moral standards, gender roles and the monogamous ideals of the men in society.
