Over the last decade, the Nagaland government has taken several steps to promote the musical efforts of its people. The State Tourism and Arts and Culture Departments organises the annual Hornbill Festival, a multi-cultural week-long festival that takes place every December in Kohima featuring folk and roots music showcases alongside the prestigious Hornbill Rock Contest, which sees some of the best rock and metal talent from across the country battle it out for a multi-lakh cash prize. In 2006, the Government of Nagaland started Music Task Force with the intention of encouraging young people to take up music professionally rather than just as a hobby.
