The history of the St. Louis Cardinals from Wikipedia.
The St. Louis Cardinals are a professional baseball team based in St. Louis, Missouri, who play at Busch Stadium, located at 700 Clark Avenue. They are members of the Central Division in the National League of Major League Baseball. The Cardinals were founded in the American Association in 1882 as the St. Louis Brown Stockings, taking the name from an earlier National League team. They joined the National League in 1892, changed their names to the "Perfectos" in 1899 and took Cardinals as their official name in 1900.
The Cardinals have won 11 World Series, the most of any National League team, and second overall only to the New York Yankees with 27. Their 18 NL pennants tie them with the Dodgers for second most among NL clubs (behind only the Giants) and third overall to the Yankees' 40 appearances. Their success has been attributed in part to timely trades over the years, their willingness to take conservative spending risks, and the creation of the Minor League system in the 1920s by Branch Rickey. Thirty-nine Cardinals have been selected to the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame.
The Cardinals were founded as the St. Louis Brown Stockings in 1880 as a member of the now-defunct American Association. Guided mainly by manager Charlie Comiskey, the club quickly achieved success, winning four AA pennants in a row in from 1885 to 1888. In 1885 they finished with a winning percentage of .705 and in 1887 of .704. In ten seasons in the AA, the Brown Stockings achieved a winning percentage of .625 or better eight times.
On the field, the team was led by pitcher Bob Caruthers and outfielder Tip O'Neill. In 1885, Caruthers led the AA with 40 games won and a 2.07 earned run average. O'Neill won the first batting triple crown in franchise history in 1887, the only one in AA history, and the second in Major League Baseball history with a .435 batting average, 14 home runs, 123 runs batted in. He also led the league in runs scored, doubles, triples, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage.
St. Louis played in an early version of the World Series, the first two times against the Chicago Cubs prototype, the National League's Chicago White Stockings. The 1885 series ended in dispute, but St. Louis won the 1886 series outright, spurring a St. Louis-Chicago rivalry that continues to this day. The American Association went bankrupt in 1892, and the Browns moved to the National League, leaving much of their success behind them for the next three decades.
