1,000 Broadleaf Weeds of North America, an Interactive Guide to Identification, is now available as an app for Android!
The must-have plant identification app for gardeners, landscapers, farmers, botanists, horticulturists, nature-lovers, wildflower enthusiasts, hikers, ranchers, homeowners – for anyone who has ever wondered, “what is that weed?” This is based on the 1,200 Weeds DVD, the most comprehensive weed identification reference available anywhere, and is as useful to the amateur enthusiast as it is for professionals in the field of weed science.
The app allows you to identify plants by specifying characteristics from a variety of categories (e.g. flowers, leaves, stem) and sub-categories (e.g. flower color, leaf shape, stem cross-section). You simply examine your plant and make choices based on its traits. You can choose to focus on very sophisticated characteristics like ovary position, or you can choose to focus on more obvious characteristics such as flower color, plant height, or leaf shape. All characteristics are displayed via detailed scientific illustrations in the interactive botanical glossary, which is as useful to novices as it is to professionals. With each choice you make, the list of possible plants shrinks.
For example, to identify dandelion:
Flower color > yellow: reduces the remaining species from 1,000 to 385
Milky juice > yes: reduces the remaining species from 385 to 44
Plant height > 2 - 4 inches: reduces the remaining species from 44 to 8
Highly interactive, the app can even provide suggested characteristics based on ease of use, effectiveness, and the remaining species.
It is easy to confirm your identification by comparing your specimen to the many colored photos or be directed to the specific page number in your favorite weed reference book.
Features:
Multiple color images of each species (over 4,000 images)
County/Province-level distribution maps for each species
Page number references for each species in over 50 of the most commonly used weed identification books
An interactive glossary of botanical terminology, with beautiful scientific illustrations
Access to the full data for each species
Alphabetize the species list by either common or scientific name or search by text string
In printed form, the information in the database would be over 4,000 pages!
All images and data can be cached to your Android device, allowing the app to be used in the field where phone and internet access may not be available
Full in-application documentation is available by pressing Menu > Help and can be printed from xidweb.com
This app is based on the 1,200 Weeds of the 48 States and Adjacent Canada interactive DVD created by Dr. Richard Old. (the app for the 200 grass-like species will be released at a later date). The DVD is the most comprehensive weed identification reference ever created for North America. Dr. Old is a renowned national and international speaker on the subject of weed identification and newly invasive weed species. He also chaired the session on Interactive Identification Systems at the XVI International Botanical Congress. An expert in forensic botany, he has worked with many law enforcement agencies to solve crimes where plant evidence was involved. Dr. Old has been the weed identification specialist for Washington State University since 1976 and has also performed the weed identifications for the University of Idaho for many years. He received the Idaho Weed Worker Hall of Fame award in 1990 and was presented the highest award of the Washington State Weed Association in 2005.

The first time I used this app (on my shiny new android flavored asus tf-101) I managed to identify two plants I had been unable to identify. This is a very nice app, does what it should, and I look for more field guides like this. Thank you. PS: WSU a

Seems high priced. Weeds of the West is only $11.90 on Amazon and these guys don't have to print. Also need to have lots of space on SD card to cache images. Half the price or more features and this app would be a good deal.
