With some makes of bluetooth headset, you can place the phone farther away from you and listen as if you were sitting up close (tested with the Motorola HT820 Headset).
Ear Assist amplifies sound coming through your phone microphone straight to your earphones. To fine-tune the incoming signal, use the graphic audio equalizer. Just point your phone's microphone towards what you want to listen to.

While I'm not hard of hearing, I can say it works wonders in the mechanic world, using my droid incredible 2 as a stethoscope to pinpoint noises on a motor. As a sign spinner I can jam my music and still hear the outside environment. This is def what I've
