- It could play real instrument sounds instead of a "dial tone"
This is one of those apps that give a whole new function to your Android. The "physical tuner" era is over. Now you can do it right from your cell phone with Tuner - gStrings. There's a chromatic tuner that lets you choose the string on the top bar and either play the sound or catch it from external instrument.
What's more, it includes a wide range of features to adjust it to your needs: frequency for different instruments, microphone sensitive, temperaments, playback octave, scale range, pitch pipe... to name but a few. You can even set the details.
If you don't like the default appearance of the tuner, you can change it from the menu by tapping on "skins". We don't really see the need to change the skin on this tool. Surely the important thing here is to have lots of settings to get accurate tuning… But anyway, it’s not a problem- just an extra feature. What we’re missing, however, are real instrument sounds in the option "play sound". The current sound is a neutral "dial” tone.
Tuner - gStrings was developed by cohortor.org, a promising developer who has launched, two other apps on the market: Metronome Widget and DCSwitch (to enable/disable data channel - APN).
Tuner - gStrings is a great app. It works properly, does exactly what it says, it has a wide range of settings for customizing it to your taste and it gives your Android a whole new use (and that implies saving some money). High recommendable.
It will let you tune any musical instrument (violin, viola, violoncello, bass, guitar, piano, wind instruments).
Features include:
1. orchestra tuning (shifting/redefining tone frequencies),
2. different temperaments (just, pythagorean, meantone, comma, etc.),
3. a variable range nonlinear scale,
4. microphone sensitivity setup,
5. pitch pipe,
and many more.
If you were looking for a guitar tuner, try it!

Works great. I used this app to tune my Jazz Bass before a gig and plugged right in and was in perfect pitch with other bassist that had tuned up with very expensive "neck" tuners! Saved me a few $$$$.
