Name?™ NZ is an extremely useful tool for outdoor people of all sorts, whether land- or water-based. It answers questions like "what's that hill called?" in real-time as you pan around with your camera.
The app comes pre-loaded with a database of almost 11,000 hills/mountains, lakes, passes, glaciers, rocks and islands - no Internet connection is required.
Geographic features out to a maximum range of 50km from your current position are displayed. Feature labels are colour-graded to indicate relative range (white = 'near', blue = 'far'). The 'range filter' slider allows you to refine what is displayed. A 'near' feature will often trump a 'far' feature - sliding the lower range limit up will hide the 'near' features to reveal the 'far' features.
If too many features are displayed for your current location you can de-clutter the display by sliding the upper range limit down - in practical terms a maximum range of 20km is usually sufficient. You can also reduce the features displayed by de-selecting feature types via the 'Settings'.
Other 'Settings' include the ability to show/hide the Heading banner and to mirror the UI to better suit left-handed users. 'Settings' are accessed via the cog screen icon.
