"LOAD The Lords of Midnight"

The arch-classical ZX game ported to mobile devices

Lords of Midnight was an eclectic game back in the eighties which was born already a legend, probably ten or twenty years ahead in time. Regrettably, there were only 48k Spectrums back then and LoM got lost within the limbo of forgotten wonders of early home computer science. Indeed, it was like it was buried as a cursed ancient relic, known only to a few. And, like old omens use to do, nearly thirty years later it comes back directly into our mobile devices. It's an odd feeling.

In order. LoM is much a non-real time war game, but it's also an adventure game as you have to solve quests starred by different characters to advance to further epic battles and eventually defeat the evil Witch King. In a very little nutshell, it's like the ultimate Lord of the Rings videogame should be. However, it comes with a heavy burden on its back: it has been ported as it was, so here we have a legend of ZX games showing off eight color screens and beep sounds, a pioneer tech (then) to make things relatively be seen in perspective and nostalgia in every little bit of data.

We appreciate it, but being what it is, coming from where it comes and costing $5, we're sure that this game deserves the adjective dissuasive. Anyway, blessed who dares to play it: not only you will be able to save the Free People from the evil's dark yoke, but also be part of videogaming history itself. May we suggest you to visit LoM's website first?

*Sad footnote: Mike Singleton, creator of the original LoM and then War in the Middle Earth (perhaps the best LotR videogame ever) among many others, passed October 10th, 2012. May loading tapes be faster in heaven.

Developer's original description available here
Mike Singleton's '84 classic Adventure Strategy game, brought to and updated for Android.

"The Lords of Midnight is not simply an adventure game nor simply a war game. It was really a new type that became known as an epic game, for as you play the Lords of Midnight you will be writing a new chapter in the history of the peoples of the Free.
You will guide individual characters across the land of Midnight on vital quests but you will also command armies that must endeavour to hold back the foul hordes of Doomdark, the witch king. Yours will be no inevitable victory." - Mike Singleton 1984

I've tried to make this compatible with as many Android devices as possible without actually owning them all. Hopefully we won't have too many hiccups along the way! If you have any issues please please contact me through www.thelordsofmidnight.com/support so that I can work with you to resolve them.

I remember spending hours playing this as a kid, making elaborate maps on graph paper... I'd known about your PC conversion for years and happily found this today. And now I can't stop playing as I relive my youth! Thank you for doing such a fine job on an absolute belter of a game. :)

I played this game when it first came out in the 80's and it was a revelation!! This android app is very responsive and correct, also love the Ghost of the Lord of Midwinter carrying the Eye of the Moon ( a tribute to the late Mike Singleton) I saw the character in the Forest of Dreams. You cannot recruit the character and it vanishes. 10 out of 10 Top app!

I still have the original tape versions of LoM and DDR for the Speccy. They were so far ahead of their time and still work brilliantly now. I spent months at a time playing these games and kept coming back. I know there is a lot of positive nostalgia on the ratings, but it is well founded. To those few who find the pacing too slow i say that is the point; it is like a game of chess. Much much more

If you have never used anything older than a Windows 98 (like me) then you are extremely unlikely to enjoy this as much as its ratings suggest. This is almost purely for folk who wants to relieve a childhood experience, and for people who enjoy old games. Like, REALLY old games. The system is brutally unforgiving, the map confusing, and the game is unplayable and unwinnable without a comprehensive

As soon as i found out this game was on Android i had to have it. and it hasn't disappointed either. I love the interface and everything runs smoothly. I'm excited just to have this app on my phone. I loved this game back in the Spectrum days. Lets hope for the follow up game is released also.

Captures the original perfectly and enhances it by adding very useful maps and joining of armies without altering gameplay.
