"- Die humans! I've come to destroy you!"
There must be tens, hundreds, maybe thousands of versions of Space Invaders, but only a few selected games have the right mix of pixelated graphics, 80s spirit and nerve to be considered a true homage. Most of the games listed as classic shoot'em-ups have better technology than the original but lack its spirit. They have no soul, as my toaster, which also has better technology than Space Invaders but can't compare about fun.
That being said, Radiant has that mix of graphics, spirit and nerve. It's a rare, indeed, nearly unique example. Radiant knows that it's paying homage to another game and doesn't hide it. It shows it off proudly and play with that idea. Dialogues are hilarious, pixelation has been exaggerated to the paroxysm and game pace starts slowy and quickens in a way that it seems that you inserted your last coin to play. In addition, the midi music you could expect has been brought up to date and the outcome is wonderful.
There's not much more to say. Tap on the left to move to the left, autoshoot and so on. Buy weapons and fly over items to get lifes, shields and upgrades. So take your seat, fasten your belt and enjoy. To make the deal greater, recover 'The Last Starfighter' from your video library at the end of the evening.
I like the games like Robotek and Radiant that those guys at Hexage do, because their games are the games I'd like to do if I were them. I'm sure that their next game I review will be also a pleasant surprise.
