"No game can be won without pawns"

An outstanding fantasy tactics game

Tactical games, called sometimes "tactics" because of the Tactics Ogre series so popular in the mid 90s, march to the beat of their own drum in mobile gaming and must be treated as a special case when it comes to mobile gaming, because they are so few that every time a new title is released it deserves all our attention. Fortunately, Rubicon's Combat Monster won't disappoint any fan of the genre.

Combat Monsters has everything you would like it had. 3D polygonal graphics and characters, beautifully detailed yet with a retro feel (those werewolf archers are great!) are truly awesome, and gameplay is second to none. In fact, since the very first stages in the campaign mode you realize it's an inexhaustible game that allows many combinations and strategies. There's an exhaustive campaign mode (pity there isn't a storyline) and you can play asynchronous multiplayer matches online.

The three difficulty levels allow all kind of players, from newcomers to hardcore strategists. The amount of monsters and skills, yet the easy rules make of this game, we can say in advance, a likely candidate for the game of the year award in the strategy category. Lastly, although there are in-app purchases to get currency, this game can be eternally played for free if you're patient enough.

As a footnote, as it reminds of Star Wars Dejarik, will it be a sci-fi version in the future?

Developer's original description available here
14 man-years in the making by a BAFTA nominated studio, Combat Monsters takes the card battle genre to new heights.

We've married up the best bits of CCG games - the deck building and strategizing, with the best bits of RPG games - the fighting, to bring you a genuine evolution in fantasy card gaming.

Even more radical, you wont be constantly begged or forced to spend money, unlike most similar games. We believe that "free to play" should mean a game is free to play properly!

AppsZoom - 91% - "An outstanding fantasy tactics game"

Build your dream battle deck from the many hundreds of available cards, pick a hero and enter the arena. Deploy your monsters to good advantage, then buff them with magical spells and equipment. Maneuvre and fight, and when the time is right overwhelm your hapless foes for glorious victory!

AppStoreArcade - 90% - "I wish that there were more hours in the day so I could play more Combat Monsters."

Core card types are monsters, equipment (weapons, shields, etc.), spells (instant effects) and runes (permanent effects). Timely deployment of cool combos can turn a battle at any moment.

Magic:The Gathering meets Battle Chess in one hell of a game"

There are many different races of Combat Monsters, each with their own special horde of warriors, mages and archers. Each race has a racial bonus that has a big effect on how you round out your deck, so plan well.

Every Combat Monster has a basic attack move and most of them also have an additional activated special ability, along with various power and defence stats that can be modified by equipping and armoring and playing runes and spells.

PixelVolt - 90% - "Amazing"

Want single player? We got you covered with a massive campaign. Play against a variety of AI opponents who are only too happy to throw all sorts of nastiness your way, at ever increasing difficulty levels.

When you've finished that, there is an endlessly replayable skirmish mode, where you can battle up to five computer opponents at once. Or you can at least try...!

GameWoof - 90% - "Rubicon knocks it out of the park again with this title."

Want multiplayer? We got you covered there too, with both realtime and asynchronous play options. Meet up online and smash the world. A full matchmaking system keeps it fair and provides a perfect level of challenge for all ability levels and collection sizes.

I'm the last person to support freemium games, but this is a diamond amongst the rubble. Between the well made concept and the devs that actually reply to reviews and make their intentions clear, I can put aside my distaste for non pay-once games, and would even highly consider paying for the iaps to support them. I'm disabled and live off a fixed income, so it gives me bias, admittedly. But I can

Great update too, hopefully it puts an end to some of the unjust 1 star reviews from people claiming pay to win tactics (FYI, there never was any, the devs are just nice enough to balance it anyways).

Well done devs! Smooth gameplay, lots of monsters and lots of possible strategies. Plus seeing my hero dance after a win cracks me up ;) @ Tyrone: please note that I'm leaving this review out of my own free will

There are multiple levels of which each contain a multiple of sub-levels where you can win gold, cards or chests (many cards). As a card strategy game, it was quite fun even though my Hero never upgraded nor did my "cards" (creatures, weapons, shields, runes, etc.) since the first (tutorial) level. Though I did get a greater variety but of still low level. Now the AI on the otherhand greatly incre
