- 1983, back to the arcades
- It's a too outdated game.
The original 1983 game ported over to Android
It's hard to evaluate a game that is about to be thirty years old. Both hardware and videogame culture were different then, and we reviewers must face the dilemma of rating it as if we still were in the 80s, based on the success and what that game meant then, or rate it as a newly developed and released game. Think about it, if Karateka landed tomorrow on Play Store from the thin air, it'd be rather considered an amateur release, or if you ask me, somehow a sort-of indie parody game parodying indie parody games (yes, it's a loop, so move forward to the next paragraph, please)
Graphics and animations are so retro than even the most retro developers wouldn't dare to do it nowadays. Sound isn't midi-like, is indeed MIDI. Gameplay, which was so great when we were children and every game costed a quarter, is tedious and annoying, as if Karateka was a drunken rave of the programmer who did Budokan years later.
We don't like either the $1 dollar price. Oh, yes, it's just a dollar, but we are talking about an abandonware game. Yes, there's work in porting it to mobile, adapt the controls and such, but we can't recommend to pay for a game like this unless there's a higher purpose or reason as the noble science of arqueo-game-ology.
Added Automatic Save feature
Added Restart Button in Option menu

I remember playing this as a kid, and this is exactly how I remember it... Even the cheesy music! I love it! I'm glad to see classics like this being brought back to life. Excellent job!
Thanx for reminding childhood moments!!!
Good game. I grew up on these games on the old IBM machines. Just like the original. Nostalgic and simple. Easily adaptable to the touch interface. Thanks for the return to my childhood. Keep up the good work.
I loved this game as a kid,its the game that got me into fighters for life.Love the touchscreen setup too.Works perfect.
I played this game last time in 1994! After that my MS-DOS computer crashed! I'm excited!
If you played the original Karateka, you will know just what to expect from this game. It is just like the original, with the helpful feature of 'rewinding' to your last death. If you never finished the game before, now is your chance!
