"A geometric shoot"

Reviewed by / May 09, 2011

Pew Pew is a multidirectional shoot’em up game akin to Geometry Wars. You will destroy a bunch of geometric enemies set in vectorial graphics

There’s no plot, there’s no script. We get a spaceship and the goal is to shoot all the triangles, circles and squares that are flying free on the background. That simple. But if you are a passionate of this kind of games you will know that its simplicity it’s its main strength. There are 4 different game modes:

Pandemonium: Enemies explode when they die or spin everywhere. Hide from the explosions or go through them.

Dodge this: Dodge the enemies to collect all the boxes.

Assault: Fight against waves of enemies. The complexity increases as it progresses.

Chromatic Conflict: Enemies of different colors show up. Destroy just the ones which are like you.

There are online leader boards to check other people scores, as well as online replays. The relaxing music is quite good and not intrusive at all. As you advanced through levels, you may unlock some new ships with offensive defense (bullets shot in every direction when hit). As the developer says in the app description (which, i have to say, it is gracefully complete and understandable), the high frame-rate is what defines this game. It is real and improve the user experience.

PewPew have been developed by Jean-François Geyelin, who has also launched PewPew2 (paid version 1.99$). It has to be said that he has well done those apps and his descriptions make clear all the game concerns.

If you’re a shoot’em up games lover, you will love this one. Simple, fast and reliable. Some aspects could be improved, but it deserves its rating.

Developer's original description available here
PewPew is the best multidirectional shoot them up on Android. It's basically megatons of enemies and many different game modes, everything rolled up with sweet smooth retro graphics.
Win medals, unlock ships, and compete on the online ladder board.

There are five VERY different game modes:

*Pandemonium:
Some enemies explode when they die, and the other spin maniacally everywhere. Hide from the explosions or deftly go through them.

*Dodge this:
As you collect boxes, there are more and more enemies moving around. Naturally, you have to dodge them all.

*Assault:
You fight against waves of enemies. Spoiler: at the end, they win and you die.

*Chromatic Conflict (NSF color blinds):
Enemies of different color appear. You can only destroy the ones that are the same color as your ship.

*Asteroids:
Need I say more?

Features:
*High frame-rate (honestly, this is what defines this game)
*Finely tuned game-play (oh, and this too)
*Online leader boards
*Online replays
*Sweet music
*Unlockable ships.
*XPERIA PLAY Optimized
*Controller support for NVIDIA and Android set-top boxes.

Now a few notes:
-Kill as many background app you can, this can considerably increase the smoothness.
-Seriously, kill them all.
-On some devices (such as my Nexus One) the touch screen has trouble handling touches on the same horizontal or vertical axis. That is why by default the joysticks are in diagonal. You can try moving the joysticks to the bottom using the settings menu, but it might result in poor controls.
-No personal data is sold and there are no ads. I'm really sorry ads-lover.

Recently changed in this version

-Improved support for Android TV.

Only played 2 mins of it and LOVE IT. Has an autopause feature that works great. Only played asteroids so far on it. Will try others in due time.
