When building your army, you start with 8 pawns on your second rank and 40 points to spend. With those points, you can buy standard chess pieces like Rooks, Bishops, or Knights, or you can buy enhanced pieces like the Overseer and Zealot. When purchased, these pieces are placed on the player's first rank.
White and black take turns buying and placing pieces (or placing their King) until either all their points are spent or their entire backrow is filled. Once all the pieces are placed, the game begins and follows standard chess rules with one exception - there is no castling in Recruitment Chess.
