HOW TO PLAY
Let’s do an example of a 2 digit guessing game. In this type of game, digits cannot repeat, so use two different digits. Let’s say the first guess and resulting hint was:
That means neither 1 or 2 are part of the answer. Good to know! You could use a “no match” digit to test out your ideas for other digits (more on that later). For now, let’s try two different numbers:
The checkmark ✓ means you have one digit in the correct position, but is it the 3 or 4? You have to guess. Let’s guess it’s the 3. (You could test this by trying 3 with a “no match” number, for example, you could try 32). Instead, let’s try two other numbers:
The hashmark # means you guessed one correct digit, but that digit is NOT in the right place. Is it the 5 or 6? Remember we also wanted to guess that the 3 was in the right place? Let’s stick with that: put the 3 first. Which of 5 or 6 should go in second place? We know 5 and 6 are in the wrong places, so for second place put the 5:
Our guess was completely wrong: 3 and 5 are not part of the answer. That’s ok: now we know enough to solve the puzzle. From the last move, we know that one of 5 or 6 was in the answer, but here we learn it is not 5. It must be 6, but not in second place (hashmark #). So 6 is in first place. Similarly, we know that one of 3 or 4 is in the answer, but we just learned its not 3. It must be 4. Try this:
That’s the answer!
