"It's a matter of perspective"

HyperRogue has CGA (if not worse) graphics, lacks any kind of animations, storyline or any other feature you would expect from a classy video game, but it is a great board cat and mice game disguised as some sort of Advanced Heroquest played in turn in a 2D board wrapped around a hyperbolic plane where different environments (and monsters!) coexist.

Said that, it's all about exploring that odd sphere where you can't go back to the same place, one tile at a time, and find the magic shards which are power-ups. You can defeat any enemy as long as it isn't "supported" by any other foe in an adjacent tile. If you ran out of tiles to move and can't kill any unsupported enemy nearby, game's over.

Tactical players, please, give this HyperRogue a go. It's worthy and beautiful, but in its own and unique way.
