    CHRONO TRIGGER's review

    Published: 2015-07-07, by .

Complete, official port of the original Chrono Trigger for SNES

    • Official port
    • Far better than an emulator
    • Relatively inexpensive price tag
    • Downloads spread out over time
    • Small onscreen buttons hard to hit fast

    "SNES nostalgia bomb"

Congrats to you, nostalgia-seeker! You've reached the official Chrono Trigger port from Square Enix, bringing with it all the goodness from your SNES childhood. It's far, far better than the days of crappy emulators: all the menus are optimized for touch controls, and a joystick simply appears whenever you tap the screen. The price tag may seem hefty at nearly $10, but consider that you'll get over 30 hours of retro play for the cost of a couple lattes (also, it used to be $60 back in the day! madness!).

Instead of downloading a HUGE initial file onto your device, this port downloads sections at each major plot point - the slight annoyance of which is worth not loading down your device. This port is based off the 2010 version of Chrono Trigger that was released for the Nintendo DS, which means that you get access to an extra dungeon, items, and cutscenes.

Swapping around onscreen tiny buttons when time is of the essence to lay the smackdown on your enemies can be a pain. But we find the convenience of instant nostalgia in your pocket is worth it.

Controls are god awful. No quick/auto save if the screen locks or you get a phone call. No cloud save to access the game in other devices. Needs internet access for constant DLC. Need I go on? Amazing classic game; horrific port. Come on Square Enix, you can do better.

One of the best games ever made ported to mobile phones a long time ago. I ha this on my iPhone but switched to droid and still it's worth playing and paying for.

Few things, that I see in every other comment, no save on screen lock, and DLC play as you go... Really? Some of us work in the military where we get no signal underway guys! Next why don't you have the cutscenes from the DS version? Or anything else from the DS version for that matter? For 10$ I expected much more! Fix the screen lock issue though, I'm serious. That's a major fail.

The game starts completely over every time I leave the screen. All progress gets lost.
