    Atmospheric side-scrolling adventure mobile RPG done exactly right

    "Reaping's never been more breathtakingly beautiful"

    If you've been following me, you'll already know - I don't game. A brain-bending puzzle app here and there, sure, but I'm a hard sell when it comes to battling, leveling up, eliminating baddies, etc etc (and I take my coffee black and I iron my socks too). Hexage's Reaper could change that. I can't imagine a more ideal incarnation of a mobile RPG.

    Reaper is a stunningly gorgeous journey through the Wilderness. It's at once reminiscent of Zelda, especially the aesthetic of Twilight Princess, and the battle-heavy Dragon Warrior (oookay, maybe I should say I don't game anymore). You play as the legendary Pale Swordsman, here to Save The Day from impish imperials, wild warriors, and maddening monsters alike.

    The tutorial stage lays out the perfectly balanced on-screen controls for you, plagued neither overly complex combos nor ming-numbingly simple slashing. Quickly getting the hang of the jumps and swordplay is key, because you are going to be distracted by the graphics. Quite frankly, they're sheer beauty - ultra smooth in programming, and vivid colors abound. The Pale Swordsman himself is the ideal balance between badass and kinda cuddly, and the enemy design is equally detailed.

    The battle scenes are interspersed with views of the map, which you'll explore automatically via quests that pop up at the bottom of the screen. Interact with the forest folk and you'll steer your destiny - like its more complex PC RPG cousins (e.g. Fallout 3), Reaper's world learns from your dialogue choices and feeds you different consequences accordingly.

    There's coins to be won, of course, which go towards upgrading your gear at the shop. Battle enough and you'll level up, offering a chance to strengthen your abilities or tack on brand new skills.

    Reaper's first ten levels are totally free to try, and you can access the rest of the expansive world via a one time in-game purchase. There are no microtransactions - you'll have to hack apart baddies the old fashioned way to build up cash reserves - which is exactly how an in-game economy of an RPG should work.

    Hexage's Reaper immediately reignited the latent gamer in my heart. Recommended for absolutely everybody.
