Gamebooks brought back to 21st century
Gamebook adventures were a popular series of well, you know, books, back in the eighties and nineties, that combined choice-your-adventure mechanics with dice and a character sheet (a simplified version of those "true" role playing games use). It was just a matter of time that someone bring them back from oblivion and updates them. This review applies to all the GA series, as there are no relevant differences regarding interface of playability between them.
Blood of the Zombies, mobile version includes some interesting options to improve further reader's experience. For starters, Ian Livingstone has written new endings, what makes this game worthy on its own, unlockable artwork, soundtrack and few surprises here and there.
We won't discuss here the quality of the content, as they are all awesome under thirty years ago standards, but the update is at the same time something great and a missed chance. Great because there are a bunch of lovely little details such as the die rolling on the table and little animations to give the game some pace and intensity. A missed chance because there could have been a lot of customization options we would have liked to really create our own character, and the sections are so word by word the same as then that if you played them as a child you will still remember which options are better. There have been a few gameplay tweaks, though, but nothing able to break the already existing (un)balance.
Anyway, this more than acceptable update on those books we loved so much has to be welcomed and praised because of its professionalism and user-oriented thinking. HIghly recommended.
"Insane megalomaniac Gingrich Yurr is preparing to unleash an army of monstrous zombies upon the world. He must be stopped and his undead horde defeated. In this life-or-death adventure the decisions YOU make will decide the fate of the world. Can YOU survive or will YOU become a zombie too?"

This app is a mixed bag, and pretty overpriced in many respects. It is faithful to the original, with the added bonus of having an automated Adventure Sheet. Plus, the music and artwork are pretty good, showing a lot of polish. However, the story still has the problems of the original - it is very linear. The target audience for this app is people who are already fans of the format, who probably a
Despite of not being a traditional fantasy FF book, it is at least as much fun and probably provides more replayability on phones/tablets. The book itself is not too bad, playing through is hard and might require a couple of tries. The presentation of the app is great, I thoroughly enjoyed reading and playing. (The music+sounds is non-existent but pls compare with any other paper-based book. ;) )
How much can you really expect?
