Action RPGs are what we used to call arcade games, and they owe what they are almost entirely from Gauntlet. Nowadays, every single game with an experience system is called a RPG, when it hasn't obviously to be that way. Anyway, Dungeon Quest is a pure dungeon crawler where every stage is a little maze plagued with monsters and treasure awaiting you. Loot all the magic items, break all the barrels (why would people hide stuff in barrels?)
Once we have placed Dungeon Quest where it belongs, we can tell that it's a really good dungeon crawler game, maybe more easy going than other similar games on market focused on exorcize demons, banish undead and tame dragons simply by kicking the crap out of them. Dungeon Quest looks like more harmless because of the cartoon-like graphics and the fun exchange of magical blows between your foes and you. Teleports and skull bombs are a great deal, by the way.
There'a a side part of this game consisting on managing all the magical junk you get in your way, firstly to make room for new and more powerful junk in your inventory and secondly to earn gold coins, necessary to purchase life (red) and mana (blue, wait, has this always been this way? since when?)
Easy to learn yet challenging sometimes, this free Dungeon Quest is an absolutely recommended game unless you were looking for a more "serious" dungeon crawler instead of a self-parody of the genre.
