Within some of that bubbles work as a notification popup for Gmail, Facebook, Twitter and SMS/MMS, missed calls. Actually, regarding missed calls, if you have attached a picture for the contact, it also will appear next to the bubble. When you touch some of the notification bubble it launches the app and the bubble goes away. There are also empty bubbles floating around.
