A smiley is one of the most recognizable symbols around. It is a yellow circle that has the appearance of a human face on it, with eyes and a mouth in black.
The first known graphic of a smiling face was made by Harvey Bell, an artist from Massachusetts. He made it in 1963 for a campaign to improve employee morale. He never promoted this graphic and never trademarked it. Therefore, he never made any money from this graphic except for a $45 fee. In 1963, The Funny Company, a child's cartoon series shows images of smileys on the hats. David Stern, owner of an advertising agency claimed they created it. He says he did not trademark it after creating it in 1967 for an ad used for Washington Mutual.
The graphic novel, Watchmen, by writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons and colorist John Higgins, features a blood-splattered smiley face prominently in the story. A pin with the emblem on it lying in a gutter appears on the first page of the book.
Thirty years ago, Scott Fahlman, a computer scientist at Carnegie Mellon University, first proposed a colon, hyphen and bracket as a way of conveying emotional meaning via plain text.
Some common types of emoticon include: a happy person, a sad one, one wearing sunglasses, the person with a wide smile, winking person, smiley with a tear in its eye…
