GrowIt is a neat app which is as attractive as the blooms it features. The premise? Social gardening! Take photos of your blooms and browse your neigbors' plant collection, pick up tips on how to improve your grows, and hey: if you're a florist or a garden centre, you can even plug your business.
Getting started is easy: log in in with Facebook or register via email, then add a username, year of birth (?), sex, and the type of garden you have (indoor, balcony, yard). Fill in your profile, then start snapping!
It's a uniquely lovely concept, and a nice way of sharing a little bit of color.
GrowIt certainly presents a unique concept - a social network for plant growers, who can share pics of their blooms, and share tips or receive advice on how to improve their grows.
When uploading a photo of your plant, you're prompted to tag with the type of plant, the color themes, and select a photo category: Leave It! (needs help), Like It! (the plant looks good), or Grow It (must have). If you're not sure what you've grown (hey it can happen), you can tag it as 'help me identify' for local experts to come to your aid.
Users can search for plants nearby (and this is hyperlocal as GrowIt uses a geotagging process to only show plants within 75 miles of the user), users, comments and trends with the search feature, and even by just the partial plant name (if you don't know it all). You can then rate your neighbors photo with a Leave It, Like It or GrowIt .
The app is only as good as the number of people you have near to you. In my case this was few (due to the strict 75-mile radius). You can search for random users though, but it's a shame this can't be done by location.
