Attention is the ability to withdraw from excessive stimuli and focus your mind on a single task or thought process. For most of us, our brains can do this naturally as we read, talk to another or just focus on solving a problem. But as simple as this sounds, our minds do tend to wander – on the look out for potential threats, noting external stimuli and noises, and ruminating on the past or the future. Research has shown that people who can sustain their attention for long periods of time perform better on all sorts of cognitive challenges than those who cannot. Additional research has shown that improved attention can reduce stress, anxiety and even improve your short-term memory.
Attention Training or Attention Span Training has been used in clinical and educational settings for over 25 years and has been proven effective for ADHD and attention improvements and recovery from traumatic brain injury. It is a widely used and has been deployed in video games since the mid-90’s.
A core component of a strong attention is Interference Control – or the ability to stay focused in the face of distractions. In the Pear Focus game training system, where you focus your aim and shoot the ripe red and green apples to collect points. Avoid the birds, weather and wind that try to distract you and you win. Next, you build a rock tower in the face of disruptions and distractions. Not only at the game – but improved attention via training systems has been shown to carry over to every day tasks where a sharp attention is important – for absorbing and remembering details, understanding and memorizing information, and processing critical data that we’ll want to access later.
