The Walking Dead: Season One's review

A horror game based upon Walking Dead series

    9
    • Loyal to Walking Dead lore
    • Smart mix of (easy) exploration and choice-making
    • Enjoyable by non usual gamers
    • Hardcore gamers may not like it
    • It might have some minigames or more pump-action stages

"Let's use Shane as bait instead of Otis, shan't we?"

Walking Dead the game is somehow a choose-your-adventure game, plagued with sumptuous and gorgeous cutscenes with dialogues worthy of a movie. Likewise, it can be considered a graphic adventure game, as you can move your character and interact with objects. There's a limited time to make choices, and sometimes your dead -'cause you'll eventually die- will be caused by actions done or done not a while ago. Everything absolutely within TV show's atmosphere and nature: you will feel as if you were in the series, though you play different characters because you know, there's life beyond Rick, Lori (well, she not anymore) and the rest.

That's all about. Explore around you, make wise and fast choices, be as ethical as you would like to be and survive. Survive till the end of chapter one, which is free and acts as a tutorial. Chapters 2-5 and next must be bought separately. Thus story unfolds in every of the three saving slots and allows you to live dramatic and thrilling scenes.

Howeeever, hardcore gamers may reject it for being too much linear and too little draconian; while casual players might feel that save points are too far one from the other and get tired of replaying scenes they left half done. More use of native hardware controls (specifically tilting) would also been appreciated.

Anyway, this game's interesting for several reasons: it brings a sackful of moral into mobile gaming, it can be played and enjoyed by anyone as it's played by tapping on places or choices (ol' SCUMM school), and it's awesome.
