"internet privacy with just a few simple taps"

Internet privacy is huge concern these days, especially with the increase of network surveillance software on more and more computers. TheTorProject brings its privacy experience to your mobile phone with Orbot: Proxy with Tor. Once you open up the app, just tap and hold the rather large power button for a few seconds to turn on safe internet navigation. Orbot works by encrypting your traffic information, so you don’t have to worry about Big Brother or anyone checking out what you’re doing. Orbot also features the option to encrypt all net traffic from all of your apps.

Orbot is a small, quick download and very easy to set-up. The Tor Bridge option lets you encrypt your traffic in networks that block Tor traffic. It currently supports a large host of international languages, with more frequently being added. The app runs in the background.

Orbot doesn’t work with every device, sometimes refusing to open or function correctly in some devices. There are only a few privacy settings available.

Orbot is a free proxy app that empowers other apps to use the internet more securely. Orbot uses Tor to encrypt your Internet traffic and then hides it by bouncing through a series of computers around the world. Tor is free software and an open network that helps you defend against a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security known as traffic analysis.

*** Android 4.0 and lower, you can download older versions from or through the open app store at The last release with KitKat and older support is: ***

On some devices, aSamsung app is listening on the same network port that Orbot needs. Download 'SockStat' from Google Play. Look for the app on port 9050. Force stop and disable that app. You can also try to change Orbot's "Tor SOCKS" setting under the Debug section to 9051 or AUTO. You can see the fix in this video:

Orbot is the only app that creates a truly private internet connection. As the New York Times writes, “when a communication arrives from Tor, you can never know where or whom it’s from.” Tor won the 2012 Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) Pioneer Award.

ACCEPT NO SUBSTITUTES: Orbot is the safest way to use the Internet on Android. Period. Orbot bounces your encrypted traffic several times through computers around the world, instead of connecting you directly like VPNs and proxies. This process takes a little longer, but the strongest privacy and identity protection available is worth the wait.

PRIVACY FOR APPS: Any installed app can use Tor if it has a proxy feature, using the settings found here: Use Orbot with Twitter, or try private web searching with DuckDuckGo:

PRIVACY FOR EVERYONE: Tor can help you confidentially research a competitor, get around someone blocking your favorite site, or circumvent a firewall to watch sports at work.

Takes a really long time to connect if it does so at all, crashes a lot and lags out my phone. Uninstalling and reinstalling seems to fix it, but the issues return after a day or so, not to mention that solution is really inconvenient.

It was working until today and now has stopped connecting to the servers. It doesn't connect to the internet at all. I'm suspecting app is dead due to recent US anti-netneutrality laws passed. That was quick!
