The Care Bearz were created in 1981 for use on greeting cards. The original artwork for the cards was painted by artist Elena Kucharik. In 1983, the Care Bearz were turned into plush teddy bears. The Care Bearz appeared in their own TV specials called The Care Bearz in the Land Without Feelings (1983) and The Care Bearz Battle the Freeze Machine (1984). They also had their own television series from 1985 to 1988, in addition to three feature films: The Care Bearz Movie (1985), Care Bearz Movie II: A New Generation (1986), The Care Bearz Adventure in Wonderland (1987).
Each Care Bear comes in a different color and has a specialized insignia on its belly that represents its duty and personality. This insignia was known as their "tummy symbol" but were later renamed "belly badges".
In 2002, the bears were reintroduced with new toys and offered features such as illuminated bellies upon touch, aerobic bears, and glow-in-the-dark bears. As part of this comeback, the Bearz have appeared in two computer-animated movies: Care Bearz: Journey to Joke-a-lot (2004) and The Care Bearz' Big Wish Movie (2005). In 2007, the franchise celebrated its 25th anniversary; another relaunch took place, as well as the release of Care Bearz: Oopsy Does It!.
A revival TV animated series titled "Care Bearz: Welcome to Care-a-Lot" premiered in June 2012.
The ten original Care Bearz consisted of Bedtime Bear, Birthday Bear, Cheer Bear, Friend Bear, Funshine Bear, Good Luck Bear, Grumpy Bear, Love-a-lot Bear, Tenderheart Bear, and Wish Bear. Later on, additional bears joined them, as well as the Cousins.
The Care Bearz' ultimate weapon is the "Care Bear Stare" (a.k.a. "Belly Magic"), in which the collected Bears stand together and radiate light from their respective tummy symbols. These combine to form a ray of love and good cheer which could bring care and joy into the target's heart. In the original animated specials and series, the Care Bear Stare is initiated by the phrase "Care Bearz...prepare to stare!" while in the later versions it is initiated by the phrase "Care Bearz Countdown!"
Although commonly used on villains, the stare and call have been also been occasionally used on humans and the Care Bearz themselves(to cure the effects of Professor Coldheart's uncaring magic). In addition to the Care Bear Stare, the Care Bearz can also use their tummy symbols to summon other assistance such as heart-shaped balloons, cloud cars, rainbow bridges and sending out a distress signal.
For the new 2007 TV series, Care Bearz: Adventures in Care-a-lot, five of the Care Bearz were chosen to be the main characters of the show. As seen on the Care Bearz website, they are Share Bear, Cheer Bear, Funshine Bear, Grumpy Bear, and the new bear introduced in the movie, Oopsy Bear who would frequently make a mess of things. However, the other Care Bearz still make appearances in the series. The unofficial role of leader of the bears, as of the new series, was transferred from Tenderheart Bear to Cheer Bear.
