Settle Up - Group Expenses's review

    Published: 2012-03-15, by .

Settle Up is an app that automatically calculates how much has to pay each in shared expenses

    7
    • User-friendly interface
    • Ease of use
    • Both offline and sync with other devices
    • Original (and needed!) app concept
    • It should include extra features: reminders for debtors, for example

"This is end of 'Who pays' discussion"

Do you remember the last trip you made with your friends? It was awesome except for that annoying discussion about how much paid one or the other. Shared expenses are always a focus of discussion if calculations aren't clear. Settled comes up with this purpose.

Just create a group with the members that are going to share expenses. You can do it offline ( just in your phone) or shared (synced across more phones and safely backed). First off, sart to input how much money each one paid (choose who pay, currency, amount and the concept). The app automatically calculates the debts of each member and who needs to be paid back (check it out from payments log). When a debtor pays back then you tap on its debt and mark it as "Settled up" (if pay in cash) or choose paypal payment option which will automatically mark it as paid after completing transaction. You can also send a debt report to the members of the group via e-mail.

That's the idea. You can create more groups and switch between them. It will be specially useful for roommates, trips with friends and any other situation in which you share expenses with other people.

The app is set in a simple but user-friendly interface made up by four tabs. Navigation is intuitive, calculation seems to be correct and it's available in more than 15 languages. In a nutshell, an app that you should have installed in your device to keep your friendship intact when sharing expenses with your mates.

The Old version of App had better user friendly interface. The New version is slow and it is not in sync with each of the members. The expenses are not getting reflected in other member's app even after 5,6 hours. Please fix these bugs. The earlier version had an option to split the expenses with 1/2/3. .weights. And it was easier to add the amount spent by each person in a transaction. Please bring the features of Old version back.

After finally using SettleUp with its new design a bit more, I agree with the complaints I read about the new design. The old layout was much easier to use in many aspects and made better use of screen space. One example of that is the option to split an expense by weight/amount. The layout allows only one group member to be displayed at the same time, resulting in a lot of scrolling and no way to see everything at once. Trying to show all expenses leads to more clicking as every month needs to be expanded manually again, which seems a bit counter intuitive to me. Description says that the app is usable offline but that doesn't apply to creating a new group. For that, you need to be online which seems unnecessarily restrictive - if expenses themselves can be synced after you're online again, why not new groups, as well? Equally restrictive - you can't enter expenses when there is only one member in the "group". Instead you're suggested to install another app. That said, the features themselves are good, it's mostly just the design and the above mentioned restrictions that I'm unhappy with. Unless I find a similar app I'll probably continue using it, hoping for some changes in the future.
