All of our cats are tested for FeLV (feline leukemia) and FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus), vaccinated, and spayed/neutered at an appropriate age. Regardless of how a cat comes to us, while in our care they receive food, shelter, daily handling and attention, as well as vet care when needed.
Most of our cats are in foster homes, living with our volunteers, rescuers, or members of the public who have generously offered to provide temporary sanctuary for a cat in need. This helps us learn the personalities of the cats we rescue, so we can work with you to select the cat who might be the best match for you and your home environment. A sampling of our cats are at our adoption center, where they remain until, if not adopted within a period of time, they are rotated back into foster care.
Most of our cats in foster care are living with other cats. Cats tend to get lonely without the company of another animal, especially if their “person” is away long hours of the day. We try to place cats who enjoy the company of other cats in a home where there is feline companionship. But, we do have many cats who would be happiest to be the only cat in your life! Kittens are most in need of animal companionship. Not only do they play together, groom each other, and sleep together, but a kitten is also less likely to engage in biting or destructive behaviors if the kitten has an animal companion to roughhouse and play with. With rare exception, we do not adopt out a kitten to be the only animal in the home.
To adopt a cat, you will meet with an adoption representative to discuss your interest in adopting and, upon approval of your application; an adoption contract will be signed by both you and KittyKind.

Petco is generously allowing KittyKind, Inc to show cats and kittens for adoption in the store. The cats are for adoption, not for sale, but we do ask for a $125 adoption fee to help cover some of our food and veterinary expenses. For certain purebred cats (Siamese, Persian, Maine Coon, etc.), we request a $150 - $300 adoption fee.
KittyKind is an all-volunteer group. We have no paid staff. We all must work regular jobs to support ourselves and the cats so we cannot be at Petco all the time. But a KittyKind representative is always at Petco during the following times:
Monday to Friday: 6 PM - 9 PM Saturday: 1 PM - 8 PM Sunday: 1 PM - 7 PM
KittyKind Petco, Union Square 860 Broadway New York, NY 10003
Our Mission Statement
KittyKind is a not-for-profit, no-kill, all-volunteer cat rescue and adoption group. Our mission is to reduce the number of abandoned or homeless animals in New York City. Even for cats who seem difficult to place, KittyKind has found homes for many of them and, when that is not possible, we try to enlist our foster/sanctuary network to provide these cats with a safe, loving home for the rest of their days. Each year, KittyKind rescues and finds loving homes for around eight hundred cats, and their happy endings attest to the dedication of our network of compassionate, tireless volunteers and the contribution of the public, in providing donations, foster homes, and, ultimately, wonderful forever homes. Visit Kitty Kind’s website (kittykind.org) and blog (friendsofkittykind.wordpress.com) to see how you can be a part of this rewarding mission.
