Offline map work well when Jeeping in the back country. Having USFS maps with my location marked has saved me from many wrong turns.

I use this for everything from hunting to dirt biking. Most of the places I go do not have service so being able to download maps and use my phone as a GPS is awesome. It's kept me from getting lost on multiple occasions.

This is a really powerful app for off the grid travel once you get used to the system. It's not the most intuitive, but it's really simple once you start using it often. Don't be lazy! Read a bit of the tutorials. I use this for 4WD travel, but have also used it for splitboarding in the mountains. Results can be seen when you export to your computer and viewed via Google Earth. It can be shared to friends, but it's not the easiest. This app uses the compass built into the phone or tablet. If the compass doesn't work, your tablet does not have a built in GPS. You will need to exchange it for one with a built-in GPS. The magnetic compass dial is very accurate. The maps provided are sufficient. The little things that could be improved: - The location cursor would be nice if it could auto-center, so you don't have to drag the screen as you travel across the map. - Sometimes when I double tap, the screen zooms into full screen and you don't have access to the controls. - Being able to toggle on/off BLM border views from main menu or screen. Sometimes the markings become annoying which requires you to click through 3 screens to toggle.
