All you have to do is reserve a static IP on your router for your onkyo receiver and it will not lose connection with the app. Static IP is the answer to your connection problems.

I have the TX-8050 stereo receiver with no firmware updates done. I like this app and use it with my Android smartphone. I can control volume, selection of net radio stations, FM tuner station changing, USB thumb drive albums selection and playing music on my smart phone to the Onkyo over my home network wifi. I like all of that. Now what I don't like: If playing any net radio station there is no stop button and the pause button does not work. To stop the music playing and data being downloaded (impacting your monthly data cap) one must turn off the receiver or switch out from net radio to another function like the tuner. The remote supplied with the receiver does have a working stop button for this. Also the control icon buttons are too close together, which is annoying when adjusting the volume. There is no sleep timer so one can set 1\2 hour, 1 hour, 2 hour auto power off of the receiver. The V tuner app for use on your PC to create and save net radio stations by user created grouped folders could be more user friendly for creating saved stations. I also lost the entire contents of the folder of saved stations for all my classical net stations for no apparent reason. I did not delete it, one day it just became an empty folder with no stations in it, while my other folders containing Rock and Jazz with saved stations remained as before. Very strange! By the way for those who have a problem with the receiver recognizing the USB thumb drive and it won't play even if the receiver is turned off and on again do this: Turn off the receiver. Then unplug the power cord from the outlet wait 5 seconds and plug it back in. USB thumb drive should connect now and play. Doing this reboots the computer in the receiver. No need to update firmware or do a receiver reset which will erase all of your user settings. I hope Onkyo will put the effort into fixing this to make the app better.
