    Johann Gottlieb Fichte was born near Bautzen, in what is now Germany, in 1762. The son of a ribbon weaver, Fichte's early education at the Pforta school, from 1774 to 1780, was made possible by the patronage of a local nobleman, his parents being too poor to pay for his education themselves.
